Updates on Chinese Labor and Foreign Direct Investment Law

IsCham Beijing is delighted to invite you to a seminar covering two important legal topics, featuring Ms. Tao XIONG and Ms. Jie (Jenny) ZHONG, both partners at Broad & Bright, a leading Chinese law firm serving mainly foreign clients making investments in China:
Ms. Xiong will speak about "An Overview of the Latest Revisions to China's Foreign Investment Industry Catalog". In particular, her discussion will include:
History and Background (a brief introduction of how the 2011 Catalog evolved from its first version issued in 1995, and how the revisions from time to time reflect China's changing foreign investment policy)
Major Changes introduced in the 2011 Catalog (discussions on the key changes on category-by-category and industry-by-industry basis; and how such changes reflect China's shift of policy focus)
The 2011 Catalog in Practice (a brief summary of the impact on foreign investment trends)
Ms. Zhong will speak about "Some Tenacious Headaches and Hot Issues under the Chinese Labor Laws", including dismissal, severance and compensation, overtime, non-competition agreement, double wages in the absence of labor contracts, trade union issues and new rules on foreign employees' participation in the social insurance scheme, etc.
About the speakers:
Ms. Xiong's practice focuses on Foreign Direct Investment, Mergers & Acquisitions, Private Equity, Venture Capital, Securities and General Corporate.
Ms. Xiong received her LL.B in 1994 and her LL.M in 1997 from Renmin University of China in Beijing. Ms. Xiong also received her J.D. in 2005 and her LL.M in 2001 from New York University School of Law. Prior to joining Broad & Bright, Ms. Xiong worked for K&L Gates LLP in the United States and O'Melveny & Myers LLP in Shanghai where her practice included mergers and acquisitions, foreign direct investments, private equity and venture capital investments. Ms. Xiong also worked as a research associate at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and as a lecturer-in-law at Renmin University of China Law School in Beijing.
Ms. Zhong's main practice areas are foreign direct investment, merger and acquisition, corporate governance and compliance, labor law counseling and labor arbitration and litigation, intellectual property rights, contract management, product liabilities, crisis management and other general corporate issues.
Ms. Zhong has rich experience in labor law counseling and labor dispute settlements gained both from her work as in-house counsel at Motorola and Nokia and from her service to many multinational corporate clients. She has assisted with drafting and negotiating individual and collective labor contracts, training bond agreements, non-competition agreements and confidentiality agreements. Her work has also included preparing employee handbooks and company rules and regulations, assisting in handling workforce lay-offs and displacements in corporate acquisitions, liquidations and restructuring proceeding and advising and representing clients in resolution of labor disputes.

Beijing Air quality, what is done and what can you do to protect yourself?
Pollution in Beijing has become one of the most hotly debated subjects on the Chinese web, with public outrage growing.
Authorities have tried to ease the controversy by promising to measure small particles by 2015 and opening one of their monitoring centers to the public. They have also questioned the credibility of the US air monitor.
IsCham Beijing, together with the Swedish, French, Benelux and Italian Chambers of Commerce, are pleased to invite you to a Beijing Air quality seminar, featuring Ms. Zhou Rong , climate and energy campaigner at Greenpeace, who will update us about the air quality situation in Beijing.
Ms. Zhou Rong will elaborate on the following topics:

About the speaker:
Ms. Zhou Rong is the climate and energy campaigner of Greenpeace. She studied Atmospheric Science in Sun Yat-sen University, and after that worked in Guangzhou Environmental Bureau for 5 years.
Ms. Zhou Rong has diverse experience of China environmental policy, factory clean production, and media. Before joining Greenpeace, she was a senior manager at Southern Weekly working on Corporate Social Responsibility.
